Moving is no easy task. It can easily become overwhelming and your left with the feeling of "where do I even start?!" AND that's where I come in! We recently moved from California to Texas and had to pack up our lives in just a few weeks time. I'm all about efficiency so I've compiled a list of must-have packing supplies and my top moving tips just for you. The best part is that all the supplies are found on Amazon so they can come straight to your door in two days max. EFFICIENCY, I'm telling ya!

So, make sure you save this post for any future moves or send it to a friend you know that has a move coming up!

Must-Have Packing Supplies

This size of boxes is perfect for moving! They are large enough to fit all the things, while also being small enough to carry by yourself. If you’re anything like me aka Ms. Independent, you’ll want a box that you can load up and move without any help.

Tape is not something you want to skimp on. Buy the good stuff and make sure you have plenty. The last thing you want is your boxes falling apart while moving. This 6 pack of tape provided us with more than enough to seal up all of our boxes.

Along with boxes, these large bags are a game changer. I was able to stuff toys, stuffed animals, books, and shoes in these bags. They remind me of the large Ikea totes, but these are a duffle bag style that zip up. You can even throw them on your back and carry like a back pack. Plus, you’ll have these multi-functional bags for the future! Win-win!

Who doesn’t love a color-coded system? The goal here is to assign each room a color and mark each box with that coordinating color. This makes it super easy to sort the boxes while unloading, without having to read every description. I recommend making a key on a piece of paper so you don’t forget which room is assigned to each color. Also, extremely helpful if you hire movers!

Another game changer! We are a family of 5 so we have A LOT of clothes, as well as blanket, towels, pillows, etc. These bags shrunk down so well, while also protecting our things. I ended up buying 3-4 packs of these bags and used every single one of them.

Top Moving Tips

1. First thing you need to do is purge and organize all your things! The last thing you want to do is pack up something you're not going to use. So channel your inner Marie Kondo and only keep what brings you joy!

2. As you start packing up the whole house, make sure you pack at least a week’s worth of your things in a suitcase. Also, pack any essentials that you’ll need immediately upon move-in in a clear bin. Essentials can be anything from toilet paper to a clean shower towel to your tv remotes. Whatever is essential for you!

3. When packing large mirrors, artwork, even televisions, use large blankets and/or comforters to wrap them up. I wrapped them like a present and used normal packing tape to secure the blankets. I personally had no issue with the tape coming off when we unpacked, leaving no residue.

4. Pack smaller picture frames and artwork in suitcases and use smaller blankets and towels to wrap each of them.

5. When packing up your dining plates, use styrofoam plates as a cushion. Alternate every other plate in a stack to eliminate the risk of your dining plates breaking during the move.

6. Leave clothes that are hanging on your hangers and cover them in trash bags. Cut a hole on the bottom of the trash bag for the hangers to stick out of and close the bottom with the clothes inside. Depending on how thick your clothes are, I was able to do bunches of about 10 items in each bag. You can even try out these wardrobe boxes to keep your things more organized.

7. Pack up your things according to the rooms in your new house as opposed to the house you are moving from. This will make unpacking much easier.

8. At the very least, hire movers to load and unload your things. It's a couple hundred bucks and your back will thank you!

The list could go on and on, but these are the tips and tricks I found most helpful and I hope you do too.

Good luck on your move! You got this!

Home is where the heart is, even if you can't remember which box you packed it in.
